The challenge

An existing Glendale home a young family had bought as a step up — four daughters, a Labrador and a casual, active life. They wanted warmth and personality with subtle nods to their Mexican heritage, never themed. The architecture set the real problem: very large east/west windows that pushed hard afternoon sun into the great room and kitchen, so the windows had to be treated as both feature and function.

The approach

Rather than minimize the windows, I made them the feature — wood shutters, substantial drapery, decorative iron hardware and layered textiles that manage light and privacy while adding warmth and weight. Heritage shows up through materiality, not motifs: terracotta floors, richly colored textiles, dark ironwork and traditional forms, collected rather than prescribed. The great room's arched 'eyebrow' window — roughly twelve feet wide and six at the apex — had to be engineered as much as designed, since the weight of the fabric and hardware made anchoring and installation matter. Especially with one adventurous daughter entirely capable of using the drapery as a swing: the hardware was specified for a treatment that might occasionally double as playground equipment.
