The challenge
A dated builder-basic bath — beige walls, a cherry vanity, a cultured-marble top — that read as an afterthought. The owners wanted a small room that felt deliberate and a little dramatic, without losing daily usability.
Functional requirements
- Wipeable, forgiving surfaces for a shared guest bath
- Enough light at the mirror for grooming
- A spot to wash the family dog
- Storage that hides the clutter a guest bath collects
The approach
I committed to a strict black-and-white palette and let texture carry the interest — honed Copacabana granite, black-and-white marble hex on both the backsplash and the floor, a white vessel sink, and white marble field tile in the shower. A marble area-rug inlay set into the floor nods to the shower niche, and the shower tile runs to the ceiling above an extra-large double niche. A wall-mounted rectangular faucet keeps the counter clear, and the handheld shower and its controls sit where the family dog can be washed. The one gold-leaf abstract — which I painted myself — keeps the scheme from turning cold.
